Scotland in miniature is an apt description of the Isle of Arran with its jagged highland scenery in the north and its fertile lowland glens in the south.
Circling the island the 56 mile coastal road goes through the centre of each of the 14 villages. There are 2 roads which bisect the East and West coast of the island: Lamlash to Lagg and Brodick to Blackwaterfoot.
Two ferries go to Arran. The main ferry which leaves from Ardrossan to Brodick (EastCoast) and the smaller ferry, which leaves from Clanoig to Lochranza (West Coast) both operated by Caledonian MacBrayne.
Stagecoach operates a regular bus service for the whole island and the main bus terminal is adjacent to the ferry terminal at Brodick. Local taxi companies are also available. Many people cycle around the villages and indeed the Island. There are many places to hire bikes (Arran Adventure, Brodick and Beach Shop Brodick)
Directions to
Linevern, Silverhill, KA27 8QR on entering Whiting Bay from Brodick: Turn right immediately at the coffee pot (i.e. after the bowling green) and then first left (i.e. adjacent to Bedford Mill). Follow the road up the hill changing from tarmac to a hard dirt road and the first cottage on you left hand side is Linevern Arran Swiss Cottage. It is marked with a Visit Scotland sign and No7 on the driveway gatepost . Please take a torch if you are arriving in the dark.
